October is when Paros stops performing and goes back to being itself. The sunbeds are stacked away one by one, fishermen reclaim the harbour, and you can walk the length of a famous beach without meeting anyone. It can be a wonderful month to visit — but it is not the same holiday as July, and it pays to know what you are signing up for.
We are a hotel near Naoussa, and we would rather you arrive with accurate expectations than rosy ones. So here is the honest version of Paros in October.
Paros weather in October
October is the Cyclades’ transition month: mostly sunny and mild, with the first proper changes of the season.
- Daytime highs are generally 20–24°C — warm in the sun, and very comfortable for being active.
- Evenings drop to around 16–18°C. Dinner outdoors is still possible early in the month, with a jacket.
- Rain returns after the dry summer. It usually arrives as a passing shower or an occasional stormy day rather than a week of grey, and becomes more likely in the second half of the month.
- Wind is less predictable than in summer. Calm, glassy days alternate with blustery ones.
- Daylight is shorter: sunset is around 7 pm at the start of October and close to 5:30 pm once the clocks change at the end of the month.
The practical difference between early and late October is large. The first ten days often feel like a quiet extension of September. The last ten can feel properly autumnal. If your dates are flexible, come early.
Can you swim in Paros in October?
In most years, yes. The sea cools far more slowly than the air, and water temperatures of around 21–22°C are typical. That is fresh when you first get in and lovely once you are swimming — and you will often have the bay to yourself.
Choose your beach according to the day. Sheltered, shallow spots hold their warmth best: the coves of Kolymbithres and the sandy beaches inside Naoussa bay are good choices, as are the east-coast beaches on days with a northerly wind. Just note that organised facilities — sunbeds, beach bars, water taxis — are mostly gone by mid-month, so bring water and a towel and enjoy the simplicity.
What’s open — and what isn’t
This is the question that matters most, so let us be specific.
Early October: the majority of restaurants, cafés and shops in Naoussa and Parikia are still open, though some operate reduced hours. Beach bars are closing. Boat excursions run in good weather but less often.
Mid to late October: seasonal businesses shut progressively, particularly in Naoussa, which is more dependent on summer visitors. You will still find good places to eat — often the ones locals favour — but the choice narrows week by week. Water taxis and most excursion boats have stopped. Buses switch towards a reduced timetable.
Parikia, as the island’s capital, is the least seasonal place on Paros and keeps a normal town life of bakeries, cafés, tavernas and shops all year. Mountain villages such as Lefkes also carry on regardless.
Because bus services thin out, October is the one time of year when we would suggest renting a car for at least part of your stay, even if you would happily do Paros without a car in summer.
The best things to do in Paros in October
Walk. This is the best hiking month of the year: cool air, clear light, dry paths. Do the Byzantine Road from Lefkes to Prodromos, explore the trails around the lighthouse and the Monastiri peninsula across the bay from Naoussa, or simply wander between villages.
See the sights properly. Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the Frankish castle in Parikia, the ancient marble quarries at Marathi and the villages of Marpissa and Lefkes are all better without heat or crowds.
Eat like a local. With the rush over, tavernas slow down and cook what is in season. Fishermen’s ouzeri in Naoussa are at their most authentic when the tables are filled with islanders.
Have the beaches to yourself. Even Kolymbithres — shoulder-to-shoulder in August — is near-empty. Bring a book.
Visit Antiparos. The small ferry from Pounta runs year-round, if less often. The village is sleepy but charming in autumn; see our Antiparos day trip guide.
Getting to Paros in October
Paros is connected to Piraeus by ferry and to Athens by air throughout the year, so reaching the island is never a problem. What changes is frequency: fewer sailings a day, and far fewer direct links to other Cycladic islands than in summer. If you are combining islands — for example choosing between Paros, Santorini and Naxos — check timetables before booking accommodation, and do not plan a tight ferry-to-flight connection, as autumn weather occasionally disrupts sailings.
Who will love Paros in October — and who won’t
You will love it if you like quiet, walk a lot, swim in cool water without complaint, and find an empty harbour at dusk more romantic than a busy one. It also suits remote workers, photographers and repeat visitors who want to see the island without its summer make-up.
You might be disappointed if you want beach clubs and nightlife, need reliably hot weather, or are travelling with children who expect a full menu of summer activities. In that case, aim for September or June.

In summer we would tell most people to stay near Naoussa without hesitation. In October the advice is more nuanced. Early in the month, the Naoussa area is still the most enjoyable base, with restaurants open and warm, calm days for swimming in the bay.
